Step 2: The "Tuck" Method

With your blouse and underskirt on, you’re ready to begin. Make sure your underskirt is tied securely at your waist. Start by holding the plain end of the saree (the fall end) at your belly button. Keeping the height so that the saree just covers your feet, begin tucking it into your underskirt, moving from your right hip all the way around your waist and back to your belly button. Make sure it's snug and smooth, without any bumps.

Step 3: Creating the Perfect Pleats

After tucking the saree around your waist, take the remaining fabric and bring it around your body again. Drape the pallu over your left shoulder and adjust the length to your liking. Now, pull the fabric tight across your chest and around your back, securing a small portion near your belly button. The rest of the fabric is what you will use for your pleats.

Using your right thumb and forefinger to create a span of about 5-6 inches, use your left hand to create a series of neat, even pleats. Once the pleats are formed, tuck them securely into the center of your underskirt, right at your belly button.

Step 4: The Finishing Touches

Now, adjust your pallu. You can either leave it to flow freely or create neat pleats. Pleating your pallu is great for everyday comfort, while a loose pallu adds a touch of elegance for special occasions.

To keep everything in place, strategically use safety pins. Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder to prevent it from slipping. You can also pin your lower pleats together to ensure they stay neat and in place, giving you the confidence to move around freely without any worry.

For beginners, materials like cotton, georgette, or crepe are the easiest to handle as they don't slip.

Saree draping is an essential skill for every Indian woman. While wearing a saree is a beautiful experience, draping it correctly requires some know-how. Getting the perfect pleats and draping the pallu in a flattering way can seem like a mystery, but this guide will demystify the process for both beginners and experienced wearers.

Follow these simple steps to master the art of saree draping.

Step 1: Get Ready to Drape

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need. Lay your saree out and identify the pallu, which is usually the most decorative end. The other end, which you’ll start with, should have the “fall”—a thick piece of fabric attached to the inner hem. While a saree can be worn without a fall, it helps the pleats hang correctly and prevents the fabric from getting caught in your shoes.
